Mambo 4.5.2 November 7, 2006

I beleive even through my short testing and inexperience with this system, i can successully manage my content and site with minimal confusion and work. Therefore pro’s of this CMS greatly out weighs the cons and i deem this controlled research a success in CMS. A great deal of time could be spent with this one particular open source system alone to get it completely wired. To further research into this topic one would test out more CMS’s to find the right one suited for each purpose. With the quick look at ezPublish i noticed that both are similar and effective in most ways and i have no problem with implementing either in the future.
In conclusion it is therefore found evident that this working methodolgy is more practical and a success when dealing with larger volumes of content. It saved time, complexity, and a great deal of stress thus far. All of these things amoungst others save money and time which is generally the goal in mind.

Furthermore i have put the current site in progress through some basic automated security testing and to be more secure then my original work method but due to time i wont go any further into this.
Although another thing i must mention is the ease of use of the mambo templates and how simple it is to create your own, altering the overall aesthetics and usability of the site. This is all done in PHP rather then a proprietor language hence making it alot simpler if your know even basic PHP. Following online tutorials made it easier again. Duplicating a original template and editing from there is a great time saving and simple idea.
Other then some small and perhaps my fault installation problems, the only other issues i have had with using this CMS is with the difference between sections and categories, and getting the page/content exactly where it needs to be.

As the site is rapidly coming larger i am realising how much easier it is to manage it successfully. With my original work method my sites become cumbersome and unmanageable quite easily producing sometimes broken links and errors and hard to navigate if im not careful. I have decided the use of the mambo CMS has been a success thus far as my site has greatly exceeded the size of my past sites and is still manageable.
A downside to the use of this CMS is ive had some issues installing the mambots or addons correctly. Im not sure the problem, but when i installed some mambots (not all) they simply wouldnt work following the online support articles. That aside, after several retries i got the addons to operate correctly and left me confused in the process. Maybe it was just human or system error and still beleive this CMS to be greatly helpful in managing a larger scale website.
The mambots i have added on include MOS chat, Simpleboard forums, Glossary Component, Exit-poll, Related items bot, and Mambomap. Not all of these have been implemented into the site yet but the poll and mambo sitemap addons have proven to be easy to use to a successful level.

Other noticable and helpful features of the mambo CMS are the easily viewable stats, most popular items, menu and logging stats, and are viewable from the home page.
The site i am using this to test and create my site on is larger then most websites i have made previously. It is for a local tractor dealership, agricultural parts and repair service for a state wide chain. The site is expected to take longer then this research assignment so atleast i should get a good idea of how the CMS works, its problems and benfits.
So far the website has about 12 pages, 90 image assets, 10 video assets and aout 30 pdf assets and i have been working on it for about 2 weeks now. The first thing i noticed in using this software is its ease of use and great power in managing my assets, saving time, money and hassle.
I particularly find useful, the option to specify which users can access the page/content, whether it be public, registered or special, along with publish and unpublishing your works and its multi language features.

I decided to stick with my original plan to test out Mambo CMS further locally. The required files were downloaded from Mambo and begun installation after i verified i had the correct system requirements. I also had download and install php, mysql and apache for the CMS to work.
Once everything was installed and operationg correctly on the server, a check was run and the licensing completed. The first thing i noticed at the CMS home page was the selection of 2 different modes, this being simple and advanced. The simple section had only help, all content, static content and frontpage sections, while the advanced user modes displays all these plus sections, categories, menu’s and trash.

In the next 3 weeks I am scheduled to create a small to medium sized website and will further research this topic by employing the services of a CMS of my choice (probably mambo). Thus helping me better understand and see its potential for content and time management when compared to my content management methods previously used in the first half of this study.
Apache Lenya 1.2.4 November 7, 2006

I only had a breif look at Lenya during the break on a acquaintences machine but was found to be easily navigatable, and edited with simple architecture and user rollout.

Apache’s Lenya is a Java/XML-based open source CMS which is recommended for online periodicals etc. Functionality and ease of use were apaches’s goals, hence why the aesthetics are less refined and pleasing then most CMS, focusing on its content and layout strengths. Furthermore it lacks support and development, having only a forum based support, no online or hard copy documentation.

Mambo is a free and also commercial WCMS created and distributed by Australian based Miro International. Mambo’s structure is based on PHP and MySQL and was design with ease of use in mind. Mambo is quick and easy to set up, and Content creators can create static pages and content items using the TinyMCE in-page WYSIWYG HTML editor. Within a mambo site, the pages can simply be in a published or unpublished state.

Mambo has a skins template framework that manages customizations to the presentation templates and allows an administrator to easily change between skins. Installing a skin is easily done through the administrative interface. Templates are written in PHP, unlike the languages that many other CMS use. Like EzPublish, Mambo has its own in depth forum and large community foundation. This along with two ideal books and the added online documentation make mambo a serious contender in the CMS range.
